Monkey

My parents tell me
I was an old child
I'd suspected as much
having borne the sweet lash
lovingly administered
at the hands of Sister Mary Marquis de Sade
enough to testify to my insouciance
whether I spoke or not
perhaps it explains my ingenious
immaturity
as an adult

A friend tells me
attentiveness requires forgetfulness
I carry the phase around with me
like a warm, smooth stone
I want to keep it in my pocket
so I can
touch it and feel
its deep, crafty wisdom
literally, a touch stone

were you such a child
an old child
blessed with being
underestimated
embodying a deceptiveness
that makes for keen, unsparing
observation
remorseless noticing
an inner landscape
of ongoing twilight
where things move authentically
with relatively low risk
and that uncanny longing
for the teeming, pulsing
disclosures
of everyday life

there's something about you
that leads me to believe
you, too, inhabit this
land of unhurried gestures
calm irreverence
watchful stillness
perhaps
you
too
carry a warm, smooth stone

  3. Always...sometimes a "something" arises that needs a stone thrown at it.

  4. Wonderful piece Harl, in sychronous echo across the ocean (and down the years) I wrote this last night: I am slowly becoming the person that I have always been

WM-- ya never know when you are gonna need a stone... glad you can relate.
Pisces-- nice coincidence and resonance.... funny how that journey is so recursive; thanks for a lovely sentiment.

  6. I relate to it so much it brings back so many memories. ;) When I was a child, I was told that my mental age was advanced by ten years. It wasn't necessarily a good thing or necessarily a bad thing, but it did mean that I could relate more with those a lot older than me, than with those my age. As with everything, maturity has its downside, too.

"ingenious immaturity as an adult" -- I loved this line instantly. Cheers.
