In one of my lives, I'm a competitive
of muscle, movement & guile
and aware of it, oh yes
all the while
I'm spinning and unraveling
I know I also dwell in it
careful to conceal
as much as I reveal
not falling prey to the cheesy grins
& easy smiles
littering this landscape
At the end of the day
I do a routine to music
I choose
the music is more important
than you might think
it is misdirection
indeed, it can be
Tango is a complicated
wildness and control
barely contained
intensities of shape, proximity & speed
instantly recognizable by its rhythms
Roxanne is not a tango
in the traditional sense & yet
a stylized version had more
heart, movement and guile than I had felt in a time
It grabbed me by the throat
taking my breath away
compelled & captured
I yielded
to its

  1. not sure if this is allegory or not...
but I wanted to give it a try in response to Jon's prompt at expressive subjects...

  2. I like your style again on this one, it has an intricate cleverness about it that stays in the mind.

  3. Very clever indeed. Bears several readings, just to read the depth in it.

  4. Very clever, you. I am liking that such can be read in different ways. Taken by one's own life's experiences.

  5. "I yielded
    to its
    authenticity "
Wise move - without the music all is grey :D

  6. I do believe you are living up to your hopes for your blog. Quite original. Well done.

  7. Love the way that the words dance down the page... quite like the tango...

And definitely an allegory... just what is up to each different reader... thanks for this

  8. i have been reading this since you posted it H and I think I finally see the dance that is being done. The free and easy movement of one who is dancing from the soul through life contrasted with the dance of one concerned with not breaking the rules learned while being instructed in the dance and how there is beauty found in the formal movements of Roxanne. Yes I like this very much even though I am a bit slow on the uptake.

  9. Jimmy, Madame and SarahA-- thanks so much for the comments on cleverness and idiosyncracy... much appreciated!
Pisces-- a sweet insight on the rhythm... thank you
Dave-- thanks for this little reminder.... I suppose I am dwelling in this place in ways that continue to surprise me
Jon... leave it to you to work with/in the shape of the words as well as their movement; thanks as always for the comment and sensibility
WM-- there are all kinds of speeds in tango and they all work...
